Served in the United States Marine Corps starting in 1956 and then the United States Army starting in 1964. He saw action in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star. He retired from the reserves with the rank of Colonel.


Orange Coast Daily Pilot, Monday, August 5, 1985: Writer Bryce L. Patterson of NB dies. Bryce L. Patterson of New Port Beach, business features editor of Heavy Duty Trucking magazine, died July 30 in Oklahoma City after and extended illness. He was 48. Mr. Patterson had served on the magazine’s editorial staff for the past nine years and was known for in-depth reports and columns dealing with government and the business side of trucking. He won a Jesse H. Neal honor ? regarded as the Pulitzer Prize of trade press journalism ? for his 1983 report on how truck fleets can deal with driver problems. Mr. Patterson served in both the Army and the Marine Corps with tours of duty in West Germany and Vietnam. He was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Purple Heart, retiring from the Army Reserve wit the rank of major. He also taught at USC and Orange Coast College and was a member of Sigma Delta Chi Professional Journalistic Society and the Bahia Corninthian Yacht Club in Newport Beach. He is survived by his wife, Linda, and two daughters, Kristy and Kelley, of Newport Beach; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bryce L. Patterson Sr., and a sister, Gayle Patterson, all of Oklahoma City.
