He married three times. He married Elizabeth Baulstone in Newport, RI, June 17, 1647. Elizabeth was born in Portsmouth, RI August 1629. Elizabeth died October 1, 1700 in Portsmouth, RI. He married Patience Throckmorton in Providence, RI, December 1655. Patience was born circa 1640. Patience died September 7, 1676. Her body was interred in Coggeshall Cem, Newport, RI. He married Mary (Hedge) Sturgis in Yarmouth, MA, October 1, 1679. Mary was born in Yarmouth, MA 1648. Mary died August 22, 1731. Her body was interred in Coggeshall Cem, Newport, RI.

He was Deputy Governor. He immigrated in September 1632. He was divorced from Elizabeth Baulstone May 25, 1655. He had a farm in the southern part of Newport, which his father had formerly held. He held many offices in the colony and was deputy governor, 1686 and 1689-90. He was several times treasurer and general assistant, and one of the petitioners to the new charter granted by Charles II in 1663. In May, 1684, two majors of militia were appointed, John Greene for the mainland and John Coggeshall for the island, hence his title. He was one of the five Rhode Island delegates to the first council held by Governor Andros. At the time of his death his holdings had increased to five hundred ten acres.
