Elam was the first Postmaster of Lebanon, CT. He then worked as a salesman for The Kendall Company, and early manufacturer of thermometers and barometers. Later he worked with the nearby Shaker colony in their herbal and seed business. In 1824 Elam started the Tilden Pharmaceutical Company which operated for 139 years until it was sold in 1963.
