Misc. Notes
Samuel J. Tilden was elected Governor of the State of New York in 1874 and ran for President of the United States on the democratic ticket in the disputed election of 1876. He won the popular vote but vote bargaining in the Electroral College gave the election to republican Rutherford B. Hayes. Samuel J. Tilden's will also left $3 Million to found the New York Public Library. On the monument that marks his grave are carved the words: "I Still Trust In The People."

He is listed in the 1880 census living in New York City with his widowed sister, a grandniece, and several servants. His occupation is listed as 'lawyer.'
